NEUROLOGY

Neurology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the nervous system. This complex system comprises the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves, playing a pivotal role in controlling bodily functions. The intricacies of neurology extend beyond mere anatomical structures, encompassing the myriad pathways that facilitate communication within the body, enabling movement, sensation, cognition, and emotional regulation.

Stroke

This acute condition arises from an interruption of blood supply to the brain, leading to potential brain damage. Internists play a crucial role in the early recognition and management of stroke risk factors, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes, along with vital emergency care.

Headaches

Chronic headaches, including migraines and tension-type headaches, fall within the purview of internists. They are often the first point of contact for patients, enabling the identification of underlying causes, development of management plans, and referral to specialists when necessary.

Epilepsy

Characterised by recurrent seizures, epilepsy requires careful management to maintain control and improve quality of life. Internists often coordinate care, ensuring appropriate medication regimens are in place while monitoring for side effects and interactions.

Dementia

Affecting cognitive function, dementia presents a growing challenge within the aging population. Internists engage in early detection and manage associated comorbidities, providing a holistic approach that includes family support and caregiver education.

Neuropathies

Peripheral neuropathies result from damage to peripheral nerves, eliciting symptoms such as pain, tingling, or weakness. Internists can help identify the cause, which may include diabetes, infections, or autoimmune disorders, implementing treatment strategies to alleviate symptoms and manage complications.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

A chronic disease affecting the CNS, MS is often characterized by relapsing and remitting symptoms. Internists frequently assist in the management of associated health issues, thereby enhancing the overall quality of life for patients.

FAQ

1Is stroke a hereditary condition?
Stroke may be linked to genetics. When this happens, we refer to the condition as familial stroke. Some people may even be more inclined to develop high blood pressure (hypertension) that may contribute to stroke. Diabetes is another predisposed condition that prevents the secretion or use of insulin. As a result, glucose can build inside the blood, damaging blood vessels and thus, leading to stroke.
2Can neuropathy cause swelling?
Changes in a person’s colouring are related to poor blood flow. In addition to the swelling, you may develop neuropathic pain as well as depression and trouble sleeping.
3Do you need a caregiver when living with Alzheimer’s?
Alzheimer’s patients can live without help from a caregiver during the condition's early stages. However, you can expect to live alone for many years with a good support structure.

"It all starts by caring enough to engage the patient in the decision-making. Many people argue that 'We don't have time for this in the consultation. I'd rather just tell people what I think is best for them, and then, they can decide whether they want it or not.' Well, that's not very caring. This might be efficient, but it does not reflect the best that we can offer.'"
